FARMER COOPERATIVES

Farmer Cooperatives – Strengthening Rural Farmers for Collective Growth

At Catalyst Liberia Incorporated, we believe that strong farmer cooperatives are the backbone of sustainable rural development. Over our two decades of work in agriculture and aquaculture, we have seen how smallholder farmers thrive when they work together — sharing resources, knowledge, and market access.

Our work in establishing, strengthening, and supporting farmer-based organizations has helped transform rural livelihoods by turning individual farmers into powerful, organized groups capable of influencing markets and improving food security.

What We Do for Farmer Cooperatives

  • Formation & Registration
We guide communities in organizing farmer groups and securing official cooperative status to access financing, inputs, and government programs.

  • Capacity Building
We provide training in leadership, governance, recordkeeping, and financial management, ensuring cooperatives operate transparently and sustainably.

  • Value Chain Development
We connect cooperatives to buyers, suppliers, and processing facilities, helping members earn more from their produce through improved market linkages.

  • Technical Support
Cooperatives receive specialized training in irrigated rice production, integrated rice-fish farming, vegetable cultivation, and aquaculture techniques.

  • Networking & Advocacy
We empower cooperatives to represent farmers’ interests at the county and national levels, giving rural producers a stronger voice in policy discussions.

Impact in Numbers

Through our projects, Catalyst Liberia has:

  • Established 35 farmer-based organizations across Bong, Lofa, and Nimba Counties.

  • Supported the creation of 3 county-level fish farmer unions.

  • Strengthened cooperatives to increase productivity in rice, vegetables, cocoa, aquaculture, and livestock.

  • Linked thousands of farmers to better-paying markets and sustainable income opportunities.

Why It Matters

By working in cooperatives, farmers reduce costs, share risks, and negotiate better prices. Cooperatives also serve as platforms for accessing inputs, credit, equipment, and training — tools that individual farmers often cannot afford on their own.

Our Commitment

Catalyst Liberia remains dedicated to expanding the reach and capacity of farmer cooperatives nationwide. Our participatory approach ensures that farmers are at the heart of every decision, driving initiatives that directly respond to their needs.

Together, we can build stronger rural communities where farmers are empowered, organized, and connected to markets.

Support Catalyst Liberia in empowering communities through agriculture and development!
